France, before the revolution. Two decadent, aristocratic ex-lovers conspire in drawing rooms and boudoirs, swooping down on the innocent and naïve, and playfully keeping score of their depravity with delicious ribald wit. Lee Mikeska Gardner helmed the play in Washington DC with an all-male cast. Bringing that concept to The Nora, notions of gender politics are skewed with the sexual, amoral, manipulative game envisioned through new eyes. Money, mayhem and men – see why Gardner’s production was hailed as "Gutsy… groundbreaking theater" by DCist.

by Christopher Hampton
Directed by Lee Mikeska Gardner

Content warning: Full nudity, sexual content, violence, and a damn good sword fight. Suggested for ages 18+.

[more+]

George Clinton is one of the foremost innovators of funk music, and was the mastermind behind the bands Parliament and Funkadelic.

Clinton started his career with the Parliaments, a barbershop doo-wop ensemble, which scored a major hit with “I Wanna Testify” in 1967. Clinton then began experimenting with harmonies, melody, and rhythm, and taking cues from the psychedelic movement, forever setting himself apart from the Motown era.  By the early 1970s, the group’s tight songs evolved into sprawling jams around funky rhythms. They dropped the “s” from the band name and Parliament was born. Around the same time, Clinton spawned Funkadelic, a rock group which fused psychedelic guitar distortion, bizarre sound effects, and cosmological rants with danceable beats and booming bass lines. Funkadelic recorded a number of influential concept albums, including Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will FollowMaggot Brain and America Eats Its Young.

Parliament and Funkadelic captured 40 hit R&B singles, including No. 1 hits “Flashlight,” “One Nation Under a Groove,” “Aqua Boogie,” and “(Not Just) Knee Deep.” Clinton’s collaborators included keyboardist Bernie Worrell, guitarist Eddie Hazel, bassist Bootsy Collins, saxophonist Maceo Parker, trombonist Fred Wesley. On stage, spectacle ruled the day, with an enormous mothership, outrageous costumes, and marathon performances.

The Godfather of Funk has also become recognized as the godfather of modern urban music. Beats, loops, and samples of P-Funk have appeared on albums by OutKast, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, De La Soul, Fishbone, and many others. As Clinton has said, “funk is the DNA of hip-hop and rap.”

In 1997, Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Guitar Center’s Hollywood Rock Walk, and earned a Lifetime Achievement Award at the NAACP Image Awards. In 2002, Spin voted Parliament-Funkadelic No. 6 of the 50 Greatest Bands of All Time.  At the start of the 2012, Berklee College of Music President Roger H. Brown presented Dr. Clinton with an honorary doctor of music degree in recognition for the funk icon’s enduring musical and cultural contributions.  Clinton continues his never ending musical journey, playing to sold-out shows across the globe.

For over 40 years The Temptations have prospered with an avalanche of smash hits and sold-out performances throughout the world! Who’s Bad’s live performance is an unrivaled celebration of pop music’s one true King. Their power-packed performance of Michael Jackson’s expansive catalog has ignited crowds on every continent and can only be described as a jaw-dropping, musical must-see. As the longest-running Michael Jackson tribute band, and the only one to predate his untimely passing, Who’s Bad has awed even the skeptics, selling out nearly 50 venues in the United Kingdom including London’s O2 in December of 2010, the venue where the King of Pop was slated to end his career with a 50-show “This Is It” concert series. Beyond this unparalleled achievement, Who’s Bad has checked some of the world’s most famous pavilions off their ‘to-do’ list, selling out their first tour of China with stops at Ningbo’s Grand Theatre and Hunan Grand Theatre in Chengsha. Never neglecting Michael’s U.S. fans, Who’s Bad has packed The House of Blues in Houston, Dallas, and New Orleans; rocked DC’s 930 Club and returned to their native Chapel Hill, NC boasting larger, more eagerly-awaited performances with every romp around the globe. Sold-out shows from Colorado’s Bluebird Theatre and LA’s Gibson Amphitheatre and Romania’s Sala Palatalui to Teatro do Bourbon Country (Porto Alegre, Brazil) tell the story: no corner of the earth is safe from this infectious party production.

WET: A DACAmented Journey is a true story of what it means to be an American in every sense of the word except one: on paper. Written and performed by Alex Alpharaoh, it chronicles one man’s ongoing story of living all but his first three months of life in the United States as an undocumented American. WET captures the precarious, red-tape-ravaged life that’s aptly nicknamed the “DREAMer” experience while trying to realize their own American dream. Alpharaoh, a social worker who knows firsthand the mental, emotional and psychological hardship of this unending process, risks his own freedom to share his story in this nationwide tour. The production—which rockets between hilarity and heartbreak— will instantly humanize the headlines and take audiences inside the realities of striving for a better life under the extreme conditions of living life as a political football.

As an African-American actor auditions for Othello he is met with four hundred years of prejudice, racism and privilege while negotiating with a young, white director who presumes to understand, and ultimately dictate, how to portray the character. American Moor challenges the capacity of theatre to fulfill the human longing to be fully visible and embraced; it's a powerful show that poses the question "who gets to perform Shakespeare?" while exploring the inequities of life as a black actor and life as a black man. Keith Hamilton Cobb’s stunning, tour-de-force solo performance returns to Boston after its award-winning 2017 run.

Poet-performer Marc Bamuthi Joseph’s love of soccer is a heritage story. As a child of Haitian immigrants, the blissful freedom of the soccer field represented the race toward the American dream. Using spoken word and fútbol-inspired choreography, /peh-LO-tah/ travels from the pickup games in rural Haiti to the World Cup stadiums of Rio de Janeiro and Johannesburg, all while combating the discrepancies of a game that promises freedom yet suffers from racial inequities. An exploration of childhood fantasies and global realities, /peh-LO-tah/ is a multi-disciplinary performance set to sounds of hip hop and samba that celebrates the joy of soccer as perhaps the only game the entire world can agree to play together.

Nineteen Cambodian circus performers utilize their extraordinary physical skills to travel back in time and shatter a legacy of silence. Created by second-generation survivors of the Khmer Rouge genocide, See You Yesterday is a visually stunning U.S. premiere that explores the fragmented narratives these young artists have inherited from their parents and grandparents. As the performers unpack the long shadow of a genocidal regime, they transform isolated memories into a shared story of hope and courage.
