Funny, brutally honest, and ultimately cathartic, Mala puts a sharp focus on what it means to put our loved ones first, right to the very end, and what happens when we strive to be good but don’t always succeed.

Named one of the best plays of the year by The Boston Globe, WBUR’s ARTery, and DigBoston when it premiered at ArtsEmerson, this powerful one-woman show written by and featuring Huntington Playwright-in-Residence Melinda Lopez (Sonia Flew, Becoming Cuba) dances between doctors and urgent 911 calls, a mother’s growing frailty, and a daughter’s quest for grace – all set during an epic Boston winter.

In 2011, democratic uprisings erupted all over the Arab world. Citizens challenged their leadership and questioned regimes. In the Eruptive Mode presents six monologues of ordinary citizens — all women — caught in the violence and chaos of the Arab Spring. These visceral, poetic monologues with song capture unheard voices, each at their own precarious tipping point.

Internationally acclaimed Anglo-Kuwaiti writer and director Sulayman Al-Bassam brought his inventive satire The Speaker’s Progress to ArtsEmerson in 2011. Now he returns with a powerful new production. Through voice, music, and sound, In the Eruptive Mode embraces contemporary language and new dramatic forms to respond to the challenges that still reign across much of the Arab world. Raw, brutally satirical, and entirely original: these are voices of the Arab Spring.

Run time is 65 minutes

"A heavy dose of political courage and mental clarity." - AL-AKHBAR

Naija Woman Talk True is inspired by multi-generational stories of inequality and transformation. Staged by director and writer Ifeoma Fafunwa, the show grapples with the issues affecting the lives of women across Nigeria, and the factors that limit their potential for independence, leadership, and meaningful contribution in society. Combining song and dance with intimate portraits of resilience and resistance, the show celebrates the women who have broken the culture of silence, challenged the status quo, and moved beyond barriers to achieve solutions. The critically-acclaimed production of HEAR WORD! returns to the A.R.T. after its US premiere in a limited run last season.

In the backwater town of Boligee, Alabama, the summer heat is rising higher, driving the townsfolk to distraction and conjuring the spirits of the past to walk the earth. Wrapped in the combustible music of a Deep South juke joint and the sweat-soaked gospel of a revivalist church tent, intergenerational stories of loss and redemption collide. Based upon biblical stories and events in the town’s history, Every Tongue Confess awakes a fiery theatrical furnace in which some will be saved, some will be purged, and the truth cannot escape.

ArtsEmerson presents the American Repertory Theater production of

THE WHITE CARD

Playwright: Claudia Rankine

Director: Diane Paulus

Dramaturg: P. Carl

Venue: Emerson Paramount Center, Robert J. Orchard Stage

In this stunning world premiere, The White Card unfolds a meticulously crafted story, raising uncomfortable questions about what — and who — are on display. Exploring contemporary headlines and cultural touchstones, Claudia Rankine's The White Card refuses to remain "just a play," safely entrenched on the stage. Like her 2014 New York Times bestselling book of poetry entitled Citizen: An American Lyric, this new play unpacks the insidious ways in which racism manifests itself in everyday situations, prompting the question, "Can American society progress if whiteness stays invisible?"

In the elegant loft of a powerful, well-intentioned white couple in the New York City art world, a black artist named Charlotte Cummings arrives in the hopes of selling her new work. When the couple’s activist son joins them for dinner, tensions arise, truths are interrogated and the notion of intent — both conscious and unconscious — becomes paramount.

"I write to provoke dialogue and to transform how we think about what it means to live and breathe in the world." - Claudia Rankine

Originally Commissioned by: ArtsEmerson (Boston, MA) in association with American Repertory Theatre (Cambridge, MA) and The Broad Stage (Santa Monica, CA).

What Ascends from Ashes choreographed by Ronnie Terrell Thomas, founder and artistic Director of Mystique Illusions, is a conceptual ballet adaptation of the mythological story of the Phoenix, who obtains new life by raising from the ashes of his predecessor.

What Ascends from Ashes is the arc of a person's life, how their spirit dies and is reborn. It is a kaleidoscopic reflection of life itself, touching challenging reference points, from moments of tranquility, to moments of turmoil.

Featured Dancers: Julia Amaral, Haissan Booth, Kevin Lewis Jr, Sasha Krumholz-Lynn, Tandy Nurse, and Ronnie Terrell Thomas.

The concept of the Phoenix in What Ascends from Ashes, is set to the music of: Peter Gundry, Clint Mansell, Zack Hemsey, Yann Tiersen, and Beethoven interpretation by Ernesto Cortazar.

Mystique Illusions Dance Theatres' goal is to explore real life situations, fantasies, and ritualistic approaches, through highly structured choreography that elicits new appreciation, excitement, and understanding of the explosive combination of mind, emotion, and body to create a dialogue through dance.

And Jesus Moonwalks the Mississippi is a poetic retelling of the Demeter myth set during the Civil War and narrated by the Mississippi River.

Having run away from a plantation in Arkansas, a father travels South in search of his daughter Po’em. En route, he is murdered and resurrected into the goddess Demeter by way of devine intervention. Now having the power to upset the balance of nature, Demeter continues her journey to find Po’em despite the fact that the world will flood in three days if she doesn’t set Mother Nature right. The goddess arrives on a plantation in the rich fertile landscape of Louisiana (a modern day Elysian field), where her daughter was a slave. Although Po’em is not there and eventually discovered to be in limbo, what Demeter unearths changes her course entirely.

In this epic bricolage, myth, spirituality, Gods and mortals are all woven together to examine the complex and profound fabric that is the American quilt.

1648, India. At morning’s first light, the Taj Mahal, an awe-inspiring edifice representing the pinnacle of beauty and the power of an empire will be unveiled. For the two Imperial guards who are protecting the palace, close friends since childhood, dawn’s first light will set in motion a ghoulishly unthinkable task that will challenge their faith, friendship, and duty. Rajiv Joseph’s dark comedy incisively examines two average men who get swept up in the beauty, carnage, and zealotry surrounding one of the legendary wonders of the world.

In the turbulent year of 1968, then Celebrity Series Executive Director Walter Pierce took a chance with a single night engagement of a dynamic, emerging, African-American dance company at Boston’s John Hancock Hall. The success of the Boston debut of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has led to a 50-year relationship between this iconic dance company and the city of Boston. Through decades of brilliant performances and educational outreach, the partnership between Celebrity Series and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has had a deep and lasting impact on the Greater Boston Community. We celebrate this anniversary as a milestone of the performing arts in our city.
