It is England,1605, and a terrorist plot to assassinate the King of England, James I, and blow up Parliament with barrels of gunpowder has been foiled. Prime Minister Robert Cecil commissions William Shakespeare to write a lasting history of the failed plot. King James wants a play and he wants witches. As Shakespeare wrestles with the dilemma of being a propagandist playwright in service to the Crown, his company of fellow actors at the Globe Theatre explore the new play and find the story might just be a political cover. Do the actors speak truth to power, the King and Cecil, and risk spending their lives in prison, or worse, lose their heads?

Equivocation by Bill Cain is the story of the play(s) that will become Macbeth, and this production of Equivocation runs in rotating repertory with Actors' Shakespeare Project's production of Macbeth.

by Bill Cain
Directed by Christopher V. Edwards

Inspired by her decades-long work with prison populations, including on the notorious Riker’s Island, Liza Jessie Peterson’s timely and urgent one-person show unpacks the human impact of mass incarceration in America. Fearlessly funny, smart and provocative, The Peculiar Patriot traces the migration of systemic injustice from the plantation to the prison yard.

Betsy LaQuanda Ross, Liza’s narrator, a self-proclaimed "peculiar patriot," who makes regular visits to penitentiaries to boost the morale of her incarcerated friends and family. Betsy is both victim and victor of this country’s prison system and her story turns statistics into achingly relatable stories, drawn from the experience of more than 2.5 million people behind bars

"The best way to truly care about a nation is to heal it, and Liza Jessie Peterson’s solo play...is a gorgeous part of that work." – Time Out New York

Run time is 90 minutes.

There is no late seating. Please arrive 15 minutes early to ensure you are seated when the performance begins.
Additionally, there is no re-entry. Patrons who leave during the performance may not return to their seats.

Macbeth, a noble Scottish lord, is shown a pathway to power and the throne by supernatural beings. His bloody ambition and ruthless wife spur him on with complete and utter abandon to make the prophecy a reality. But everything, especially power, comes at a cost. Shakespeare’s eerie and thrilling tragedy explores unchecked thirst for control, tyranny, and its consequences.

by William Shakespeare in a translation by Migdalia Cruz
Directed by Dawn Meredith Simmons

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Play on! Project updates Shakespeare’s texts for modern audiences. Beginning in 2011, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, in collaboration with the Hitz Foundation, commissioned 36 playwrights to "translate" Shakespeare’s plays into 21st century English. The resulting adaptations are "literal translations" of Shakespeare’s plays. Much of the original, heightened language remains while obsolete words and complex phrases are updated for contemporary understanding. Play on! aims to include audiences, inviting them to experience Shakespeare’s plays in their linguistic present.

Who’s Bad’s live performance is an unrivaled celebration of pop music’s one true King. Their power-packed performance of Michael Jackson’s expansive catalog has ignited crowds on every continent and can only be described as a jaw-dropping, musical must-see. As the longest-running Michael Jackson tribute band, and the only one to predate his untimely passing, Who’s Bad has awed even the skeptics, selling out nearly 50 venues in the United Kingdom including London’s O2 in December of 2010, the venue where the King of Pop was slated to end his career with a 50-show “This Is It” concert series. Beyond this unparalleled achievement, Who’s Bad has checked some of the world’s most famous pavilions off their ‘to-do’ list, selling out their first tour of China with stops at Ningbo’s Grand Theatre and Hunan Grand Theatre in Chengsha. Never neglecting Michael’s U.S. fans, Who’s Bad has packed The House of Blues in Houston, Dallas, and New Orleans; rocked DC’s 930 Club and returned to their native Chapel Hill, NC boasting larger, more eagerly-awaited performances with every romp around the globe. Sold-out shows from Colorado’s Bluebird Theatre and LA’s Gibson Amphitheatre and Romania’s Sala Palatalui to Teatro do Bourbon Country (Porto Alegre, Brazil) tell the story: no corner of the earth is safe from this infectious party production.

WET: A DACAmented Journey is a true story of what it means to be an American in every sense of the word except one: on paper. Written and performed by Alex Alpharaoh, the show chronicles his ongoing struggles and fight to remain in the only home he has ever known, the United States. WET captures one man’s relentless journey toward becoming a documented citizen. WET captures the precarious, red-tape-ravaged life that’s aptly nicknamed the "DREAMer" experience while trying to realize their own American dream.

Alpharaoh, a social worker who knows firsthand the mental, emotional and psychological hardship of this unending process, risks his own freedom to share his story in this nationwide tour. The production – which rockets between hilarity and heartbreak – will instantly humanize the headlines and take audiences inside the realities of striving for a better life under the extreme conditions of living life as a political football.

"Delivers Nail-Biting Suspense...as expertly ratcheted as any Hitchcockian suspense thriller." – LA Weekly

As an African-American actor auditions for Othello he is met with four hundred years of prejudice, racism and privilege while negotiating with a young, white director who presumes to understand, and ultimately dictate, how to portray the character. American Moor challenges the capacity of theatre to fulfill the human longing to be fully visible and embraced; it's a powerful show that poses the question "who gets to perform Shakespeare?" while exploring the inequities of life as a black actor and life as a black man. Keith Hamilton Cobb’s stunning, tour-de-force solo performance returns to Boston after its award-winning 2017 run.

Victorian repression clashes with liberal expression. Cloud 9 follows a British family from colonial Africa to contemporary London through unexpected trysts, gender swaps, role reversals, and power plays. This provocative, exuberant, time-shifting comedy is both a parody and spoof of the ever-changing world of sexual politics. Caryl Churchill, lauded with "creating a new theatrical language," was recently recognized by The Guardian as "now sharing with Tom Stoppard the title of Britain’s most significant living dramatist."

Nineteen Cambodian circus performers utilize their extraordinary physical skills to travel back in time and shatter a legacy of silence. Created by second-generation survivors of the Khmer Rouge genocide, See You Yesterday is a visually stunning U.S. premiere that explores the fragmented narratives these young artists have inherited from their parents and grandparents. As the performers unpack the long shadow of a genocidal regime, they transform isolated memories into a shared story of hope and courage.

Caryl Churchill, lauded with "creating a new theatrical language," was recently recognized by The Guardian as "now sharing with Tom Stoppard the title of Britain’s most significant living dramatist."

by Caryl Churchill
Directed by Lee Mikeska Gardner
